Join this small-group course to create functional pottery using hand-building techniques every Wednesday morning during 5 weeks. With only four participants per session, you will receive individual guidance as you learn the three foundational methods: pinching, coiling, and slab building. Through hands-on practice, you will explore various texturing and glazing techniques, completing a curated collection of 6 to 8 finished pieces.
Week 1 – Introduction and Core Techniques
Participants begin with a studio tour and orientation, followed by guidance on wedging clay. Fundamental hand-building techniques are introduced, including pinching, slab rolling, and coiling. This session establishes the basic skills and working methods used throughout the course.
Week 2 – Decoration Methods
Focus shifts to surface decoration. Participants learn practical techniques to add texture, pattern, and detail to their clay forms, supporting both functional and creative development.
Weeks 3–4 – Guided Making and Mentoring
Participants create additional pieces using the techniques introduced in earlier sessions. During these weeks, the instructor provides individual mentoring and practical direction, supporting beginners while allowing more experienced participants to refine their approach.
Week 5 – Glazing and Firing Overview
The final week covers glazing techniques, including dipping, brushing, and waxing. Participants receive a brief introduction to kiln operation and firing. Guidance is provided on glaze chemistry, layering colours, and preparing pieces correctly for firing, including keeping the base clean.
